I stayed in Japan during two periods before and after 3-11, from November of 2010 to January 2011 and from June to September 2011. As someone who had lived for the past twelve years in a dying auto-workers’ city near Detroit, in a virtual condition of hermetic withdrawal, I felt like a mole being throw out of the ripped surface of the earth and exposed to the rays of the nuclear sun.
